Jörg Halubek

Jörg Halubek is a specialist in early music as conductor, harpsichordist and organist. Rediscovering and reviving forgotten operas and other niches of repertoire is one of his hallmarks. At the Tage für Alte Musik Herne in November 2023, he presented L’Ercole amante by the completely unknown French Baroque composer Antonia Bembo (1640-1720) together with his own ensemble, il Gusto Barocco. Jörg Halubek and il Gusto Barocco discovered the forgotten opera and performed it for the first time at the Festival Stuttgart Barock in May 2023. Another rarity that Jörg Halubek also performed with the Bachchor and Philharmonic Orchestra Heidelberg in 2023 was Carl Heinrich Graun’s Christmas Oratorio. He gave his China debut as organist in November 2023: he was a guest with an organ concert in the Hangzhou Concert Hall and a master class at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music.
 
Interesting invitations to make return visits have followed in 2024: together with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, he kicked off the new year with works by Haydn and Cimarosa at the New Year’s Eve Gala held at the Konzerthaus Freiburg. In the spring of 2024 he will return to the Theater Luzern, where another rarity from the world of opera is on the programme: Vivaldi’s Giustino will be performed under his musical direction (Premiere 5 May). With il Gusto Barocco, Jörg Halubek will take part in the Festival Stuttgart Barock 2024: on 26 April, they will present works bya Scarlatti and Grimani.
 
Besides working as a conductor, Jörg Halubek has been active as harpsichordist and organist both in Germany and abroad since winning the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 2004. His expertise in working with early music is documented by award-winning recordings of works for keyboard instruments and violin with the Baroque violinist Leila Schayegh: Johann Sebastian Bach’s in 2016 and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s in 2014.
 
A recording of the first performance of Sigismund Kussers unknown Baroque opera “Adonis” with il Gusto Barocco was released in January 2024 by cpo. The seventh part of the Organ Landscapes was released in January 2024: this time, Halubek is exploring the organs in the Johann Sebastian Bach Church in Arnstadt in Thuringia. The eighth part will follow in November, recorded on organs around Dresden built by master pupils of the famous organ builder Gottfried Silbermann. “Suite & Concertos” (2022) with il Gusto Barocco was followed in 2023 by “Partita & Concertos” with Berlin Classics. Early in 2023, the recording of “Cleofida” was released, an arrangement of Händel’s “Poro” by Georg Philipp Telemann (SWR 2/cpo). In recent years, recordings were released of Claudio Monteverdi’s “Marienvesper” (SWR 2/cpo, 2020), Johann David Heinichen’s “Flavio” (first recording SWR 2/cpo, 2019) and Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello’s “Tisbe” (SWR 2/cpo, 2015), among others.
 
The professor for historical keyboard instruments at Stuttgart’s State University of Music studied sacred music, organ and harpsichord in Stuttgart and Freiburg with Jon Laukvik and Robert Hill. He specialised in historical performance practice with Jesper Christensen and Andrea Marcon at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
